An original story rhyme for young children which tells of 7 little princesses. Each princess has a favourite colour and was born on a different day of the week. Links in nicely with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Share the colour pictures on the smart board or print them out, laminate and make into a book. Following the story, ask the children what they can recall about the Princesses - Who was born on a Monday? Who has a room that is a terrible mess? Who likes to wear yellow? etc. Next, there are 6 sets of cards to cut out and sort. There are 12 colour cards with matching black and white ones. Each card shows a pair e.g. a bear and a bat/ a snail and a worm / a snake and a butterfly. Encourage children to speak in sentences to describe what they see. Children can colour in the black and white cards and match / make them the same as the colour ones. They can cut them out and make pairs. These memory games are based on Kim’s game which generally uses objects. Each game has 5 colour pictures all with a topic theme: Farm Characters/people Transport Bugs Buildings Seaside Garden Stationary Circus Feelings Page 1 gives the teacher instructions on how to play the game. Then there is a worksheet to go with each topic. These are for the children to write their lists on and to cut and order the pictures from memory. There is a blank template that you can use for any other topic you are teaching. Extend the amount of pictures for more able /older children. This game links to maths /number/counting to 5 and literacy, speaking and listening and list writing as well as sequencing.

Skills include counting to 5, knowing and using ordinal number, ordering the days of the week, developing memory skills, sequencing and colour matching. On each day of the week from Monday to Friday, the narrator sees a different animal. So, on Monday, the animal is a slow snail, Tuesday, a slow snail and a happy hippo etc. Children can join in the reading of the story on the PPT using the picture cues to help them. Encourage the children, later, to recall the animals and days of the week without the picture cues. There are 3 sets of flashcards to cut out and laminate- animals, ordinal number and days of the week. Following the story, use the flashcards as an activity where children sequence, match and recall.
